Welcome to the Outer Banks

Reviewing the teen drama everyone is going crazy for

Welcome+to+the+Outer+Banks

Whether you’ve seen it on social media, heard about it from your friends or Netflix recommended it to you, I’m sure you’ve heard of “Outer Banks”. The internet seems to be going crazy over this Netflix original series. After seeing countless posts about it on social media, I couldn’t help but wonder, what is so good about “Outer Banks”?
Netflix has many fantastic original series such as “Stranger Things”, “Orange Is The New Black”, etc. so of course I was pretty excited to hear that they had once again produced another popular tv show. However, I didn’t get exactly what I expected.
Set in the Outer Banks, North Carolina, this teen drama follows the lives of the Pogues and the Kooks. The Pogues are the poor kids who work for everything they’ve got, and are portrayed as the heroes. John B (played by Chase Stokes) narrates and navigates the story. He is the son of a man who was lost at sea, and he has lived by himself for months due to his legal guardian being in a different state.
John B and his friends, J.J (played by Rudy Pankow), Pope (played by Jonathan Daviss), and Kiara (played by Madison Bailey) are all Pogues that decide to look for The Royal Merchant because it’s said to have $400 million in gold. On this action-filled treasure hunt, the four teens are constantly running from the police and others trying to kill them just because they’re looking for this shipwreck.
What would a teen drama be without a forbidden romance? The main character develops a love interest in Sarah Cameron (played by Madelyn Cline), who is the sworn enemy of Kiara and princess of Kooks. Kooks and Pogues are constantly rivaling throughout the show because of class differences and other petty drama.

It’s no secret that the director picked attractive young adults in order to attract a certain audience.

This series is only ten episodes long, and each episode is about 50 minutes long. Honestly, the first few episodes are not that good. There was a little action but nothing that had me super intrigued. I found myself constantly checking my phone or pausing the show to see how far along I was because I was really bored. However, the show really picks up in episode 5. Things finally start getting interesting, and you will be questioning which characters you can actually trust.
Would I recommend this show to someone? Probably not. I really like the setting and the unique storyline. But, it is still just another teen drama that seems to include all of the same characters as every other teen drama. Personally, I feel like most of the audience is only watching because of the cast of the show. It’s no secret that the director picked attractive young adults in order to attract a certain audience.
If you like action, treasure hunts, and typical teen dramas, you should definitely check out this show. Otherwise, I do not think that “Outer Banks” is as special as everyone seems to be making it out to be.
