Minecraft, a popular game created on Nov. 18, 2011, has finally got its movie. Directed by Jared Hess with the help of many others, they finally released the “A Minecraft Movie” teaser on YouTube on Sept. 4, 2024, and it has obtained more than 25 million views in the past three days of its release.
“I think it’s just one of those things that doesn’t need its own movie, and I think the decision to put real people in Minecraft pixelated setting was a weird choice,” Senior Vivian Lucas said.
Many people grew up playing Minecraft but seeing it, it’s very unsettling how it turns out to be with all the realistic blocky mobs and block textures. It is reminiscent of the popular texture and shader packs that can be added to Minecraft to make it look realistic back in the day.
“Minecraft is a block game, so we will make it blocky. But, the rest of the style is just nothing to do with Minecraft,” Youtuber Joseph Mark Garrett (Stampy) said.
The teaser mentions a group of four people: Henry (Sebastian Eugene Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers), Dawn (Danielle Brooks), and Garrison (Jason Momoa). They enter a survival world in Minecraft with the help of an expert crafter, Steve (Jack Black). To return to their world, they must master the world and protect it from evil.
“Words cannot describe how much I dislike this trailer, I hate it,” Senior Chloe Peterson said. “It looks AI-generated. The mobs look horrible, everything about it looks horrible. Who are these random people who just walk in and look around? Why is Jack Black, Steve, and why did they give him a dirty blue shirt? I swear if Alex comes by at the end, it’ll just be some random chick in a green shirt that isn’t even ginger,”
A survey was sent to all Fondy students, and the results showed that 60% disliked the Minecraft Movie teaser while the rest were unsure or enjoyed it. Many negative responses were received about the style, look, and full cast. Many would have preferred the movie to be fully animated instead of live-action.
“It is a real-life mix with computers which is always going to be tough to do,” Youtuber Daniel Robert Middleton (DanTDM) said. “Everyone has different visions of what a Minecraft movie would look like so then you look at someone’s interpretation of it and it doesn’t look like yours, it’s going to be confusing.”
The full Movie is said to be released on April 4, 2025. With Jack Black in the cast, it will give some humor and laughter to people, which would decide if the movie would be worth it.
