Do we really know our teachers? Mrs. Elford has been teaching math at Fond du Lac Highschool for 21 years but what does she enjoy outside of school hours? Here is some insight into Mrs. Elford’s interests.
Q: What music do you listen to outside school?
A: I mostly listen to Christian music, pop, or rock. I’m listening to Brandon Lake the most, I’d say, but I’m pretty open to about anything.
Q: What is your favorite thing to do outside of school?
A: I like to go for walks or go hiking, especially when it’s somewhere in the woods. I like being outside, so that’s probably my favorite thing. I like to read or watch Netflix. If it’s cold outside or rainy or snowy, I’ll do that too. My favorite is to hike to a waterfall or something. But if I’m just going around here, I like something hilly or in the woods, something pretty to look at usually inspires me the most.
Q: What is the most fun trip you’ve taken?
A: Well, my family and I have been trying to do national parks the last few years, so we’ve recently gone to national parks in the state of Washington. There’s three there; those were very pretty. But probably for my favorite trip, I went for my anniversary this last summer to Italy. I saved up for a long time for that one, and that was really cool. The food was amazing, and the sights, all of it was good.
Q: If you weren’t teaching what career would you probably have?
A: I always thought it’d be cool to fly, fly a helicopter or fly planes, some sort of pilot. I’ve also thought about doing something to help other people, maybe for the city. I don’t have the degree for it, but I think it’d be cool to help people that are in need of supplies, housing, or a lawyer. I think if I left teaching, I’d do something like that.
Q: What is the biggest difference you’ve seen between being a high school student and now being a teacher with high school students?
A: I don’t think when I was in high school I realized how hard teachers work. We’re here early, we stay late, we work through our lunches to help people sometimes and take papers home regularly. I really enjoyed high school. I sang in choir and I was in our musical. I did debate team and track; I really tried to be involved. So I’ve tried to do that as a teacher as well. I run different clubs and different activities. I guess that would be more of a similarity. I was more of a procrastinator when I was in high school. Now, as an adult, I don’t have time to wait till the last second on everything. So that is a main difference.
