Senior student-athletes have great goals and new mindsets going into their last seasons. An injury caused a bump in the road for one swimmer, but she and the boys soccer seniors are still showcasing their leadership for their final runs.
Swimming:
Eva Horn has been swimming competitively for ten years as of this season. A broken leg right before her senior season has created a shift in her typical routine and her goals for the next couple of months. “I’m just trying to make the most of my senior year and have fun at practices and meets,” Eva said.
With weekly meetings, the team dynamic has shown through. “The team truly feels like a big family. We pick each other up when someone is having a bad day, motivate each other to push through a hard set, and have a good time at practice and on bus rides,” Eva said.
Though she has fun with the team, as captain for her senior year, Eva plays a new role in holding her teammates accountable during practice and getting everyone going each day. Any problems that might come up she will handle and take up with the coaches if necessary.
Not only a star in the water but also an involved student, Eva participates in the National Honor Society, Cardinal Community Mentors, and Big Brothers Big Sisters. She is planning on continuing her education at UW-Madison in psychology.
Soccer:
Several seniors on the boys varsity soccer team have begun stepping into their new roles for their last season. “I think it makes you try harder, because [it’s] your final year obviously you wanna go out playing your best,” David Murillo, left wing for the Fondy Boys Varsity Soccer team, said.
“My junior mindset was like ‘Oh yeah, I got one more year left so I’ll be fine if I do bad this year,’” Jesus Javier said. “And then now that I think about it, it’s like… doing my best, trying my hardest in the game.”
So far the team’s record is 6-4-1 (win-loss-tie), with few games left before playoffs begin. “I think our goal is to make sure that our team stays focused together, so keep playing as a team so we don’t lose that momentum,” Alex Brunet said.
“We’ve got a good team this year, we’re gonna go far,” Jesus said. With seasons coming to an end, bittersweet moments are arising. Overall the seniors are prioritizing hard work and a great end to their high school athletic careers.
